Animal Rationality essays I bark, therefore I am: The question of rational animals Many individuals look at their dog or cat and wonder what the furry little creatures are thinking or question the reasoning behind a particular action. Here is encountered a very large debate in the philosophical and psychological world. Are certain animals, other than humans, rational creatures? Of course, there are people who sit on both sides of the fence on the rationality issue. Donald Davidson, author of "Rational Animals", proposes that no other creature on the face of the earth has the ability to rationalize, besides the human. Mr. Davidson derives a particular formula for proving, in his mind, that his hypotheses are correct. I, however, differ with Davidsons views and even question his logic at points. Throughout the course of my essay, I will describe Davidsons progression of thought as well as confirm his theory unworkable. By proving against Davidsons theory, I hope to undoubtedly show that there are, in fact, certain rational higher-level animals. Donald Davidson attempts to beat down any arguments for animal rationality in his essay, "Rational Animals". Davidson does do a relatively good job of convincing the reader of his notions. By proposing a progression of four interlocked steps, which condenses to only two later in the essay, Davidson hopes to dissolve any doubt that animals do not have rational minds. First, Davidson proposes that animals do not have a network of beliefs. Both Davidson and I agree on our definition of what a belief is. A belief is the knowledge of a certain idea, object, or concept. In regard to describing the term "network of beliefs", a quotation from Davidsons essay works the best: "One belief demands many beliefs, and beliefs demand other basic attitudes such as intentions, desires, . . . The oath is still used today, but it is usually a revised version of the oath. There are opposing views on rather the oath should have been modernized or not, and rather the new modernized oath is equivalent to the qualities stressed in the original Oath. The father of medicine, Hippocrates, created the Hippocratic oath. The exact date is argued, some experts say it was established in the sixth century B.C. while others say it was the fourth century B.C. The original form of the Hippocratic oath doesnt allow abortion, euthanasia, surgical procedures, and sexual relations with patients. The oath has been used through decades and most medical schools to this day take a type of the Hippocratic oath. This oath has stood the test of time, but does undoubtedly need the reforms that have been applied through the years. Many argue that it is a tradition and should not be changed, but with advancing technology some parts must be changed. One aspect that should not be changed in the Hippocratic oath is do no harm. Doctors have control over many peoples lives daily, which provides them the knowledge and opportunity to either heal or kill. The Hippocratic oath stresses that a doctor should not use his or her skills to harm the patient. Doctors are expected to value humanity and provide compassionate care, and this is a major common understanding. Having one ethical guideline helps physicians to make the correct decisions. Hippocrates wanted people to trust and respect the person they trust with their life to; therefore, he established an ethical guideline. She is flopped down onto the chair designated for those condemned to the Highest Measure, and looks at us, holding clenched hands to her mouth.            We – Nikolas and I – look at her indifferently.            â€Å"Marjorie Penant. Nickolas states.            She nods numbly.            â€Å"You have killed†He starts repeating her sentence to her. We are required to do it. Psychological torture it may be, but its part of the common procedure now. Something required before we finish our job. It is difficult otherwise, to            â€Å"I have killed no one!†Her voice rings out suddenly, kicking my train of thought off track. You should cry with relief that we are a humane society and merely killed them – not did what we are going to do to you. Be self-contemptuous, be afraid, be dead – my voice commands it all.            â€Å"Nonsense!†She gasps stubbornly. â€Å"Th The soul Isnt something to be taken away by the likes of you!!†           â€Å"Pedagogue.†Nikolas says calmly. â€Å"Parts of the soul are shown as a human being gets older. Gradually. It does no harm this way.†           â€Å"And destroys our humanity!†She says proudly.            So typical of the old-style humanists. You have been through meeting with parts of your soul.†           â€Å"And they have taught me much.†She raises her chin proudly.            â€Å"The shadows do not teach.†I frown. â€Å"They take away.†           She looks upon me with an expression I have not seen since my initiation. It is pity. â€Å"Then you were unable to cope with their lessons. As the fourth child was unable to cope with mine. And it will kill you. As it killed them.†           â€Å"And you.†I reply.            â€Å"No.†She says simply. â€Å"Go on. I want no other last words.†           I and Nikolas silently lead her to the silver arch. She is left under it, as we walk to the sides of it. We press our palms to the sides pf the arch, and darkness begins playing between it, almost touching it. The feeling of stepping through the arch is like skydiving, I know. Without a parachute.            She throws her hands up. â€Å"Nothing is true! Everything is permitted!†And jumps through the arch. The darkness swallows her, and wavers, as the machine starts working            Nikolas turns to me. â€Å"I think we will have a new one among us.†           I scrutinize the arch. The gate to the Other Side was reserved for those who did not deserve the Death Penalty. Especially those who committed the ultimate crime against humanity – destroyed the integrity of society by teaching younglings about souls before they were fully grown. This was the standard tactic of terrorists these days. Most return from the arch dead, a cruel death. It contains a realm of endless madness, among which, somewhere, is your own self, inflicting the insanity.            I know all about it. After all, I had once stood before the same gate myself.            The darkness wavers once more, as it spits out the woman who was Marjorie. Her eyes are dead now that she knows what she has been teaching her children. Sanity is limitation, after all. Those who break limitations too early, die to the world. Mistakes are made and people learn from them. In life things are lost but something will always come from it. There have been many events in history and in literature that prove this saying right. In order for they’re to be an advance, or for something to be gained there are costs of sacrifices to be made but in the end the result is usually beneficial.      In between 1861 and 1865 there was a Civil War in the United Sates of America between the North and South in which the South wanted to secede from the Union. The civil war ended with a human cost of over half a million lives and untold amounts of property. It was a brutal conflict. Reuniting the nation proved to be a long and difficult task. The North’s victory meant that Lincolns goal of keeping the nation whole was achieved. He looked to restore peace and harmony. â€Å"The Emancipation Proclamation†of 1803 had announced the North would abolish slavery in the rebelling states. Lincoln planned to have the rebel states pass laws abolishing slavery, but since the states took no action congress moved. In December 1865, the states ratified the thirteenth amendment abolishing slavery.      In the play â€Å"A Raisin in the Sun†, Lorraine Hansberry, the younger family was not a very wealthy one. Their financial troubles caused for tension and discontent. An event in this play changed the lives of the Younger’s forever, when a check of $10, 000 arrived. This money comes form the hard work of Mr. Younger, husband of Mama, in this play who worked long hard hours to provide his family with this check after his death. It took the Death of Mr. Younger, and his strenuous work he did all of his life to receive this check. With this check the family could now move into a comfortable living space, and help them live life easier.      Overall, in order to gain something one must lose something.
